Guggulu is an Indian bedellium-derived niryasa, or oily latex. Gummosis from the plant yields guggulu, an oleo-gum-resin that is amorphous, translucent, and solid sticky.


Pharmacological actions of Guggulu:

Rasa: Tikta, Katu, Madhura, Kasaya

Guna: Laghu, Tikshna, Snigdha, Picchila, Sukshma, Sara

Virya: Usna

Vipaka: Katu

Prabhava: Tridosha shaman

Karma: Medoharam, Agnimandyaharam, Sodhaharam, Vedanaharam, Vranshodhanam, Vranaropanam

Amayika Prayoga: Medoraga, Snayukandara sodha, Sandhishula


Modern pharmacological aspects of gum Guggulu

It has carminative, aperient, and demulcent properties. The main claims are that it can be used to treat neurological conditions, rheumatism, syphilis, leprosy, and urinary disorders. Chronic ulcers are treated using gum resin-based ointment formulation.
